A look back at the history of sports in Stephenville

By NICHOLAS CUTLER, the Georgian

The Bay St. George area has always produced winning athletes and teams.

Over the past few years we have seen the rebirth of the Stephenville Jets- resurrected from the glory years of the 70's and 80's.

The athletes have excelled in a number of different ways, winning awards and championships throughout the years. We have seen generations of athletes in this region.

Billy Hynes, a former Stephenville Jet, was once named the Stephenville Athlete of the year. Almost twenty years later his son Stephen, did the same.

A fixture for sports fans over the years has been the voice of Don Gibbons from CFSX radio. Mr. Gibbons, the voice of the Jets, has been calling the games for a long time and it is always a pleasure listening to him on the radio.

This past month the Senior Black Belt Taekwondo Championships were held in Stephenville. This was a national event.

Master Wayne Simon competed in these kinds of events years ago but this time he was a coach for the Newfoundland and Labrador team.

Mr. Simon said that he was really proud of his team and very impressed with the way the tournament went.

Stephenville has a long and proud history in sports. A history that really should be put on display for people to see on a permanent basis.
