Main Street was the scene for the largest car show ever held in the town of Stephenville, as 67 cars, trucks, jeeps and motorcycles lined the curb from Tim Horton's to the Royal Bank. Those who braved the rain showers were witness to such classics as Joe MacNeilís 1929 Model A Ford, Ken Seawards 1958 Ford Skyliner and Ken Noelís 1948 Pontiac Silver Streak.
The display, part of the Town's 50th Anniversary Celebrations, received rave reviews from participants and spectators, which General Manager Roger Hulan says, was the goal of everyone involved.
"When we started to get ideas together for the display we only knew one thing, that we wanted to have something for everyone on Main Street," said Mr. Hulan.
"Some people were a bit hesitant about entering their vehicle because it might have needed some work or wasnít considered a classic. But our idea was that if it's something they want to share with the public, we didnít want to stop them."
The end result was 67 entries from Rocky Harbour to Port aux Basques. Organizers would have liked to get more car enthusiasts from the central and eastern regions, however, coordinating the long travel and hectic summer schedules hindered their progress.
"We were in contact with the Newfoundland Antique and Unique Auto Club about getting Joey Smallwood's Land Rover here for the show," said Mr. Hulan, referring to the vehicle Newfoundland's past premier used to drive across the newly opened Trans Canada Highway.
"The only problem is that it's mothballed right now and would have needed some work before it could have been shipped over, the process would have taken a while."
Mr. Hulan says the weekend of activities, which also included a barbeque, dance and poker run, went off without a hitch. The dance/barbeque was the sight of draw prizes and award presentations to participants. The winner of the Peoples Choice Award was Dermot Collins with his 2001 Chevy Corvette Convertible, Rick Callahan received the Cruisers Choice Award for his classic 1955 Chevy Bel-Air Convertible, and Garry Decker of Rocky Harbour was presented with the Long Distance Award. Terry Penney was awarded the Mayors Choice for his 1949 Dodge Street Rod.
